Ice is one of the most diverse surfaces for family fun - there is so much to do, including Ice Skating. The great thing about ice skating is it can be anything you want it to be. If you fancy being the next Torville and Dean then you can learn technical jumps and spins. Whereas if speed is your thing, speed skating is your thing. Team sports is also catered for in Ice Hockey and dancers can even try Ice Dancing!

Of course, many families will just want to master the basics of this great activity that children of all ages will enjoy. If you just want to enjoy gingerly skating round the edge whilst holding onto the barrier, you can do that too! Whatever you do choose to do will need pracrice as it is not like a duck taking to water - it can be difficult at first. This does provide a great excuse for a family day out, as you can rent skates and practice for hours and hours and help each other along the way.

Ice rinks can be potentially scary places for some young beginners as they are thrown into the ring with people a lot older and a lot faster. That's why most centres throughout the UK dedicate sessions just for the youngsters to come and practice in a less pressurised atmosphere with people their own age, which can make it easier and more fun. Once they've learnt how to skate though, this should not be a problem as they will be giving the older ones a run for their money!

Some centres even offer family sessions where small groups can learn to skate and then practice these new skills for a reasonable fee.

If you are interested in Figure Skating there are many opportunities for you to try this sport. This has been mde popular in recent years with shows involving celebrities and this has seen an increase in the opportunities open to anyone nterested in the sport. There are 5 competitions for figure skating. Men's singles, ladie's competitions, ice dancing, pairs skating and synchronised skating.

The aim in each of these is to perform as difficult a routione as possible, making it as eloborate and extravagant as possible and presenting it as well as possible. many rinks offer one-on-one tuition so that you can improve your skating, whatever level you have reached, which obviously encourages youngsters to get involved. To find out more about Ice Skating visit the NISA website here. To find an ice rink local to you, click here.
