Poole's Cavern
Poole's Cavern is a 2 million year old, natural limestone cave situated in the beautiful woodland of Buxton Country Park in Derbyshire and has been visited for 5,000 years since Neolithic tribes first used it's chambers as shelter. Visitors enter the cavern in comfort through easily accessible, illuminated chambers, with guided tours leaving every 20 minutes from the visitor centre.

The tragic Queen of Scots is the most celebrated of Poole's Cavern's visitors. The huge flowstone feature in her section of the cave is said to have been named following her visit in 1580. In recent years some tour guides claim to have heard ghostly footsteps by the Pillar when the cave was otherwise empty.
First christened the 'frozen waterfall' by the Victorian visitors, the feature is a wall of rock completely covered in calcite or flowstone formations. It is one of the few places in the cavern where blue/grey, orange and black colouration can be seen
Other features of this magnificant cave include the River Sink where in winter months, the roar of the water flow is constant and echoes through the cascading caves. High in the roof of the passageway beyond the Roman Chamber is The Great Dome - the most ancient of Buxton's many fine domes, rising to a height of 12m. The view down the cave from the bridge is spectacular. From here you can gaze back down one of the largest natural cave chambers in the Peak District, 130m (400ft) to the Roman Chamber.
Tours - Guided tours of the cavern last approx. 45 minutes and leave every 20 minutes throughout the day. There is a constant temperature of 7 degrees in the cavern, so dress warmly. Cameras and flash photography are permitted however the use of video cameras is restricted for safety reasons.
Tours are conducted by experienced guides who provide real insight into the history of the caves and are on hand to answer any questions you may have with a chance at the end of the tour to return at your own pace and ask questions that you may have. Myths, Legends and the history of the cave are all covered to give you an educational experience as well.
Great fun for all the family and with accessability very easy, young children can easily and safely explore as well! Great for all ages and enjoyable as well as informative, you are guaranteed to have fun exploring the underground abyss!!

Archaelogical Finds - By far the most abundant of the excavated remains were fragmented bones and teeth of animals including cattle, sheep, pigs, brownhares, domestic fowl, fish, oysters and cockles. Most of these were probably food remains and are typical of other Romano-British sites in the Peak District. A number of pieces of the bones found had been fashioned into utensils such as handles and needles, and a number of human bones and teeth were also found.
