Equestrianism, the formal name for horse riding is becoming an immensely popular past time, and when you are riding on horseback, you gain a whole new perspective of the world and its surroundings with the ability to see over hedges and across fields and meadows. People of any age or abillity can ride a horse and with many centres around the country offering lessons for incredible prices, there is sure to be a centre near you.

If you're a little anxious at the idea of riding a horse, the main thing is not to be afraid of the animals and there are lessons for beginners at stables right throughout the country helping you to taking your first steps to becoming an accomplished rider. Rides can last from anything up to several hours and once the family have grasped the basics, what better way to see the country than to see it by horse as you take a relaxing cross-country trek. You can even take it further with sports including showjumping and polo also widely available!

Riding Schools provide hard hats although for a better fit, you may prefer to bring your own. Riders should wear boots and long trousers. Trail riding is an adventure which you must do if you take to this experience. The Lake District and Northumberland have some of the best trails of all the land. Riders are permitted to stay on marked paths and you should be wary of wildlife, cyclists and dogs.
