Fencingis the ancient art of swordsmanship and it has developed into an exhilarating modern sport full of intriuging adventure and excitement. Want to become a budding d'Artagnan and play this lightening fast battle of the titans? - then fencing is for you!! Fencing has been described as a game of chess played at ferociously quick speeds with you having to anticipate your opponents every step.

Although it is primarily a mind game, co-ordination, motivation, technique and tactics are also vital. Physical attributes are also a necessity with speed, agility, aerobic fitness and suppleness also key to a strong battler. Many are put off by the use of swords but you must remember that the clothing provides ample support and with scrupulous rules ensuring safety - fencing is one of the safest combat sports to play.

Fencers score points through 'hits' with their sword and the competitors are hooked up to electronic devics that monitor the official score, due to the speed and nature of the game. There are three types of weapin used in modern fencing

  • The FOIL - The most common discipline for beginners is the lightest and only hits to the opponents torso with the point of the sword are valid
  • The EPEE - Using a slighly heavier weapon, scoring is again through the tip of the sword, but this includes the whole body
  • The SABRE - This differs from the other 2 forms as it allows hits with the edge of the sword as well and any hit above the waistline is a valid hit.

This exhilarating sport is not only adrenaline pumping, but also rewarding and great for exercise. For people who are not interested in team sports, this may be for you as success is down to individual's skill and effort and is a game in which men and women compete against each other. There are many fencing clubs throughout the country with most offering taster sessions for beginners.
