Hiking is just a fancy name for a walk in an unspoiled area of the countryside with no other purpose but to relax and explore as well as enjoy your surroundings. It can proivide a welcome break from the 'hustle and bustle' of inner city life and proivide the kids with a great opportunity for adventure and exploration.

The gentle pace fosters relaxed converstaion, making it a great way for the family to spend some quality time together. A hike is not a structured activity and where, when and how long you go for is really all up to you. Hiking can be combined with other outdoor activities such as biking, angling, geocaching, observing wildlife and picnics to make it a great family adventure!

Popular hikes include Cheddar Gorge in Somerset and Weaver Hills in Staffordshire that mark the beginning of the Peak District. The Cheviot Hills Area in Northumberland and the Cnewr Estate in Brecon Beacons. However, hikes are not restricted to sepcific places and you are largely permitted to travel through most of the English Countryside. If you are unsure about where to hike however, you can visit the Ramblers Association which exists to promote walking and has many suggestions for group and family friendly hikes. Longer walks are quite exhaustive and are not advisable for inexperienced walkers and some may seek training before embarking on walks spread over a number of days. For shorter walks, all you really need is a map, a waterproof jaket and a pir of hiking boots along with food and water. Longer walks require all these necessities as well as an extra jumper, fleece, snacks, sunhat and suntan lotion. If you need some outdoor equipment to help make your journey that little bit easier, visit Outdoor Gear by clicking the logo below.

It is also advisable to tell close ones where you plan to go and you should always leave a copy of your route behind and tell someone when you expect to be back.
