Kayaking

Kayaking is a watersport that can either be relaxing and tranquil, or fast and furious - and it's a great way to explore together as a family. Propulsion comes from your own physical exertion or the tides, but it is not exhaustive and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Hiring a kayak for a day or weekend is a great way to explore the vast waterrways.
A common misconception is that a canoe and a kayak are identical, yet there are subtle differences with a canoe being open ended and a kayak enclosed and for sitting only. Kayaking on canals and rivers is perhaps the safest way to explore the sport, but you should still have some basic training just to be sure you are aware of the drill if you happen to capsize.
There are some excellent waterways in South Wales and the West Country taking in miles of placid water without locks. Kayaking clubs and shops can rent you kayaks and also take you on guided paddles. Some people prefer sea kayaking and the British Canoe Union holds regular organised paddles to let beginners join with novices ad have a go at sea kayaking.
Once you have become confident enough with the experience, you and the children may want to take to more challenging conditions in tide races or you could try sea races, where you can race for anything up to 12 miles. Overall, a great family treat and one for everyone to come and enjoy.

A BCU approved centre is your assurance of high standards of safety and qualified instruction. Equipment and facilities are approved annually and Approved Centre status is only awarded when the approval officers are satisified that all aspects of the canoeing activity at the centre are up to standard.
