Korfball

Korfball is the latest craze to sweep into the UK after proving very popular in both Belgium and Holland. It is a mix between netball and basketball and is one of the few games where competition are of mixed gender. Teams are made up of four men and four women and it is played on a court divided into 2 zones each with a basket in it. Points are scored by throwing the ball through the basket in the other team's zone.

The fact that the game is mixed sex and can't be played indiviaully makes it a perfect game for all families to enjoy and partake in. You cannot run or dribble with the ball, but there are no set positions so everyone gets a chance to defend and attack, and tactical nouse usually provails over physical strength - no blocking or tackling is allowed! Action consists almost entirely of passing the ball by hand from person to person. Attackers try to lose their defenders in order to create a shooting chance.

This is not easy because an attacker is not allowed to shoot if the defender is within arms length and nearer to the post. Players may only mark a player of the same sex.The ball is similar to a football. The two zones, defence and attack, are occupied by two men and two women from each team.

It may be played indoors or outdoors and is a great game for the beach as well as being played at many clubs around the country, with clubs always looking for new people to come and play.
