Martial Arts can be the most fruitful actvitiy that you and the family can take, with the combination of discipline, self-confidence, self-defence and general mental fitness providing an invigorating work-out that is great fun and suitable for all ages! There are many forms of martial arts and they all offer something different. The most popular forms of Martial Arts in the UK are Karate, Judo and taekwando and origninated from the far-east, in Japan and South Korea. Some martial arts use weapons, but this form of combat is strictly controlled by the rules and conventions of each martial art.
If you have no idea what the subtle differences between the forms are, we have a basic guide to the overall elements to try and help you establish which one you may prefer.
- Karate - A form of grappling Martial Arts with emphasis on striking your opponent with punches, kicks and open hand movements. It is known as a 'striking art'
- Judo - Founded in the roots of ju-jitsu, judo concentrates more on trying to floor your opponent using grappling techniques
- Taekwando - This martial art focuses more on kicking. It is the national sport of South Korea. Taekwando develope strength, speed, balance, flexibility and stamina.
These are obviously basic definitions and each sport involves much more than this. Many martial arts are linkened to dancing rather than a form of physical combat with each requiring a degree of self-control. Martial arts can help aggressive people to channel their energies into something effective, whilst it may also help shy people boost their self-confidence. It is a great sport for children of all ages with various competitions to partake in, if you want to take your interest further.
