Take aim with the sport that is all about the ability to focus your mind. In action movies and computer games, the aggression and anger expressed help you hit the target - eventually. But target shooting is something different with emphasis on self-discipline and concentration to help you focus on your target. Some may think that the use of the guns may be inappropraite for children, but it is a safe sport and most clubs have a minimum age of 12.

Obviously, the compliance with safety regulations is vital as it can be dangerous if not carried out properly and this activity should not be tried unless you are under the guidance and supervision of the clubs. There are a whole range of clubs throughout the country. A list of the available clubs can be found on the National Rifle associations website, just click here to find your local club now.

Joining a club gives also gives you the opportunity to decide the type of target shooting you want to take up and the main types are short-distanace and long-distance. Short-range shooting may be more suitable to inexperienced shooters who want to get a feel for the sport, whereas olympic style long-range shooting is best suited to more experienced shooters.

Targets are usually made from paper and placed on a wooden frame, just like a picture onto an easel, and frames can be up to several hundred metres away, depending on the type of shoot you choose. The bullseye itself is very small and it is not just a case of holding, pointing and shooting, there is a specific technique involved and it is by no means easy! You need to hold the gun steady, whilst factoring in things like the speed and diection of the wind, which will affect the trajectory of the bullet in relation to the target.

All types of shooting in the UK are heavily regualised and standards expected from all clubs are so, that target shooting is probably one of the safest sports to try. Legislation on the sport changes quickly, bringing in newer, stingent laws to make it as safe and fun as possible. It's great fun for all the family and provies a challenging, mentally stimulating experience that will appeal to all. Most clubs have a minimum age requirement of 12 yrs old, but this does vary from club to club, so be sure to check with your local club for more details.
