It doesn't take long at all to learn the very basics of sailing and you will get better with experience. Many courses are offered throughout the country with some offering children as young as 8, the chane to learn how to manage powerboats. The RYA offers a beginners two-day course for people wanting to learn how to use a dinghy and there are special courses for under 16's. Click here for more details.

These introductory lessons should give you enough experience and confidence to then build your skills to then go afloat under supervision. Sailing is such a great experience and one that the family can learn and enjoy together. There are a few locations where there are specific courses for under 16 year olds and these are listed below.

Furthermore, you can take courses in a variety of RYA's programmes aimed at getting children under the age of 19 into the sport, and giving them enough experience and expertise to progress. For more information, regarding this and many more courses open to all ages, click here
