Fishing is one of the most diverse activities for the family to do. It can be done almost anywhere and is a great activity that can last all weekend. Patience is a virtue in this game as you try an entice the fish onto your bait and sieze your chance to catch them, before they swim away! Long associated as a male-only sport, fishing is now a past-time enjoyed by many women up and down the country, and is the perfect family weekend away.

Why not combine a day fishing with a camping trip under the stars, or if you like, you can fish during the night, as long as the fishery you choose allows this. There are a few things that you should be familiar with before deciding to go fishing. It can be a long-draw out process so be prepared to wait for your moment and it is a great excuse for a traditional card game or game of Monopoly! But there are also rules to be adhered to, to make the experience easier for all involved and details of these are listed below:
- Rod License - Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland must have an Environment Agency rod licence. Money from the sale of licences helps to fund the work managing fisheries. If you are caught fishing without one, you are cheating other anglers and could be fined up to £2,500. Purchase one from your local post office or here from the environmental agency
- Fishing Permit - A fishing permit is issued by the owner or lessee of the water you are fishing, usually an angling club, and gives you 'permission' to fish the water. Sometimes called day tickets, permits are usually available from an angling club, the fishery owner or sometimes from a representative on the bank. Some places offer free fishing, you will however still need a rod licence.
- Bylaws - Different areas will have different rules on the limitations and allowances for your fishing trip. Be sure to see if any bylaws are restricting your trip here
If you need somewhere to fish, but don't know of anywhere in your local area, the Environment Agency has listed all the fisheries in the UK. Find your local fisheries by clicking here.
